![]() Many of the prefaces listed below have been available for some years in printed form as Dispatches from the Front (UW Centre for the New OED, 1987), edited by Dr Darrell Raymond, formerly of the University of Waterloo (Ontario). This section includes all of the known Prefaces issued during the publication of the First Edition (1884–1928). Many parts and sections were issued with Prefaces-or, in some cases, short prefatory notes-written by the relevant Editor in addition, when a volume, or a half-volume, or a particular letter was completed, a separate Preface might be produced for it. It continued to be possible to purchase the Dictionary in the form of ‘parts’ of roughly the same size as the earliest fascicles, these being generally equivalent to five single sections. The aim was to produce at least one section every quarter sometimes it was possible to issue a ‘double section’, or even on occasion a ‘triple section’, containing twice or three times the usual number of pages. From 1894 it was decided to issue shorter fascicles called ‘sections’ a typical section contained 64 or 72 pages. The earliest fascicles were called ‘parts’, and contained over 300 pages. (I am also putting this review on the other WordWeb App Store products I own, because they really are part of an integrated product. The First Edition of the Dictionary was originally issued in short parts or sections-now often called ‘fascicles’-as well as in volumes (and, later, half-volumes). They are truly excellent for writers, academics, and other researchers. I have used these WordWeb softwares for 9 years (since 2009) before they were on the App Store. If you have not looked, check out the other offerings by this developer. But for everyday use this is a fantastic set of products. Of course it would be amaziang to have the entire Oxford English Dictionary, but that license is impossible to obtain and would cost $1,000. As far as content, it does not get any better than Oxford and Chambers. The content is very well organanized, and the interface is up-to-date with the latest improvements in MacOS. These WordWeb dictionaries (Oxford Dictionary of English in this case) are basically an exceptional replacement for the built-indictionaries in MacOS. And I chose to buy the full set of Oxford dictionaries from this app maker because they all interface very well together. Great App + Great Content ESPECIALLY WHEN COMBINED WITH OTHER DICTIONARY APPS BY SAME APP MAKERįirst of all, the interface is great. ![]()
